Re:  More Shared Pathways in Broulee

At our last General Meeting on February 19th 2009, members voted unanimously to work in cooperation with Eurobodalla Shire Council to jointly plan for and fund more shared pathways in Broulee.  It was agreed that the first priority is to connect the existing pathway from the corner of Coronation Drive along Heath Street to the new pathway leading down to the Broulee Surfers SLSC and South Broulee beach.

We aim to follow a similar model to other local communities who have used a mixture of fundraising, matched grant funding and volunteer labour and materials.

To get ensure the success of this venture, your help is needed. Donations of money or promises of in-kind support (cement, steel, backhoes, labour, morning tea provision), ideas for fundraising, ideas about future pathways – all of these and more are welcome.

Please fill out the slip below and send to:

Subject: Broulee Shared Pathways

Marie,

Thanks for the information. It is good to hear the group is actively pursuing their goals by getting involved in such a pro-active way.

The priorities mentioned are noted. Certainly the Heath Street connection would be high on our priority for Broulee.

In respect to the connection to North Head, we would support this in principle and I have walked a route for this extension to occur. However, any Council funding for such a proposal would have to come at the expense of other works in Broulee township (and across the Shire). This proposal would also require some design work and a full review of environmental factors as a matter of course prior to proceeding.

It would appear at this stage that your group is giving priority to the paths within the town. We would support this position in any recommendation to Council as the paths within town are likely to receive much higher usage than the link to North Head. Therefore the connection to North Head would be a lower priority at this point in time.

The pathway mentioned in Train Street is worthy of consideration for the reasons mentioned. This pathway would also be funded from the same source and need to compete against the others mentioned (and those across the Shire). Unfortunately, the State government has not offered grant funding to footpaths, even where schools are involved.

We will consider the above in putting our pathway strategies together.

Subject: Broulee Shared Pathways

Good afternoon Warren

Some good news from Broulee. Firstly we have become incorporated so we are now officially the Broulee Community Association Incorporated.

Secondly we have been talking to other community groups, particularly our nearest group, the Moruya Heads South Cyclepath Group, who addressed our last General Meeting on February 19th on the process of
fund-raising and working cooperatively with Council on building shared pathways.

1) At this general meeting, it was voted unanimously to start the process of fund-raising and canvassing support from our wider community. Also all the possible new pathways were discussed and the one to get overwhelming support for first priority was the connection from the existing path on Coronation Drive to the new path on Heath Street leading to the surf club.

A letter to the community will go out soon and we will keep you informed of our progress in terms of financial and in-kind support. Our first raffle has already begun with a donation of a framed photograph of Broulee Island.

The meeting however wished us to make two other points to Council via yourself.

2) Our community is very keen on the extension and grading of the bush track from the end of Bengello at the wind sock to North Head. We wonder if this is perhaps a separate Council project? In any case, we
simply wish to state our full support for such a venture and are keen to hear any news of this idea being progressed further and anything we can do to assist.

3) The final issue is the lack of any path outside the Broulee Long Day Care Centre and St Peters Anglican College in Train Street. We have been surveying this area and note that some children are riding to St Peters but only have a path to take them as far as the intersection with the west end of Cambridge Crescent at which point they must alight, cross the road and walk along the verge dodging cars on the driveway into the day care centre. The community feels that this is a traffic management and safety issue which would be best addressed by Council in cooperation with St Peters.

We look forward to your response and to working cooperatively with you on the building of shared pathways in Broulee.

Yours sincerely

Support for Tomakin Community Association – road-widening proposal

Dear Darren and Tomakin Community Association executive,

The executive committee members of the Broulee Community Association Incorporated wish to express their support for your endeavours to seek a widening of George Bass Drive from the Tomakin Garage to the bridge over Tomaga Creek to allow for safer cycling and pedestrian traffic.

Many Broulee residents walk, run and bicycle along this section of road for general recreation, for fitness training and some also to access the Tomakin Club, beaches and shops. There are quite a number of committed regular cyclists in our village of all ages, including a few senior citizens. Also with the shared pathway along Coronation Drive, Broulee has become a popular cycling spot for tourists who wish to do more than the kilometre or so currently available.

As we have previously informed you, our own committee is currently working hard to fund-raise and plan for extensions to the shared pathway along Coronation Drive. Our first priority will be the joining of the current pathway where it ends on the corner of Heath and Grant Streets to the one recently built outside the Broulee Surfers SLSC at Bengello Beach.

We wish you well with your current endeavours and hope that, one day, we will be able to join our two villages with a shared pathway for the health benefit of all in our region.

Yours sincerely

Correspondence relating to shared cycleways in Broulee (and Tomakin)
... copy of letter from Tomakin Community Association

Marie,

Following our monthly meeting on Thursday, I’d like to make a formal request from the Tomakin Community Association to the Broulee Association

We have a meeting with the Mayor this Thursday in regard to the bike path / road widening from Tomakin to Mossy Point with our main focus on the section from the Tomakin service station to the Tomago River bridge.

As you would know we have been pushing this for some years with no joy.

ESC have informed us that a survey design has been now undertaken and will be sent to various departments (?) for counsultation.

Typically nothing we believe has happened which has led to us meeting with the Mayor for some answers.

ESC initially informed us that the survey / design would cost $10k which they have allocated (TCA offered professional services to do this for nothing!) and then some $30 – 40k for environmental impact studies

We have a civil road contractor who can professionally widen the road by 1.5 metres for around $40k in the first stage to the river.

What the TCA is requesting off the BCA is a letter of support to get the road widened for safety of all users with our main concern being the safety of our children who want to / need to use the road to get to the schools, surf club, sports at Captain Auldry and soon access to the yet to be finished skate park, all of which are in Broulee along with general usage of residents at both the Moorings and south of the river who regularly walk to the club in Tomakin.

On another issue it has been raised by our members that we need the speed limit along George Bass Drive slowed from 100 km / h to 80 km / h with the Tomakin Rd/servo and Ainslie Pde intersections already having many accidents and countless misses, along with the soon to be opened Barlings Beach development intersection.

This 80 zone needs to start from the northern end of Barlings Beach to at least south past the Moorings intersection

Can you please put this on your agenda to discuss this with your members at your next meeting as the BCA may look at wanting the 80km /h zone extended further past the Mossy Point intersection (no fun getting out of there some times) or even to the Sth Broulee intersection incorporating the Carroll College section at which point we could approach Council collectively to raise our concerns.

We look forward to your response on both issues.

Regards

Correspondence
Dear Councillors

As secretary of the Broulee Community Association Incorporated, I am writing to express our support for the inclusion of extensions to our existing bike paths in Broulee.

At our general meeting of Thursday May 21st, our members were informed about the budget nominated for Broulee bike paths for 2010 and were also told about the special rate variation. Whilst there was some discontent about the rate rise, everyone was very pleased that our efforts over the last 9 months working, communicating and planning cooperatively with council staff have resulted in our community's inclusion in the budget. Council officers are also aware that we are doing our own fund-raising to supplement these council projects.

On this matter, we are obviously delighted that the Broulee skate park is nearly complete but members were perturbed that media releases about the recent federal funding used to complete the skate park did not mention the original funds raised by the community for this project, apparently a substantial sum of around $12,000. This lack of acknowledgement is negatively affecting our efforts to raise money for the shared pathways and fueling people's scepticism about council's accountability. Hopefully at some opening of the skate park, this initial contribution will be mentioned.

Thanking you
